Are candles in working gas fireplace safe?

We are in an apt with a working gas fireplace, but never turn it on because we were told it costs a lot to use. Want to have some ambiance for the holidays and was hoping I could light some candles on a holder and put them inside. Does anyone know if this is safe?Serious answers pls...hopefully someone who's worked w/fireplaces before.
