Batman: The Long Halloween?

I heard this novel took part in inspiring the movie, "Dark Knight". It is an awesome read and I highly recommend it to anyone who is a Batman fan. However, one question to those who have read it: What happened to Julien Day? Last he was in the book, Harvey Dent looks at him, apologizes then turns out the lights on him. Then that was it. So what happened?
