Is it possible for a dog to have mental problems?

i have a 7/8 month old Alaskan malamute pup, ever since we got him he has been a bit on the crazy side i take him on regular walks and he is always fed a good meal, i remember when we went to pick him up the mother nearly went for my brother and he dog in a bad way? could it be hereditary to the fact of my dog having issues?
