Help i dont know if i can use dial-up on my laptop?

I just got a gateway NV53A52u. I don't have high speed or broad band and I thin that's all it is set up for bc it says the network adapters are working fine. But I tried to set up a dial up connection and it couldn't detect the modem. So am I gonna have to get high speed (like hughes net?). I'm not good with this kind of stuff
